cf,
Regarding Gray: I wouldn't really care if we dropped him, honestly, but I think that the reason you do not is that it may have negative impact with local coaches/etc. do you think that is valid?
Regarding commitments: It seems that a large number of recruits are commiting early this year...and backing off their commitments, from your news and Tony's reports also. Do you think it will get to the point where early commitments mean absolutely nothing, if it hasn't already, and everyone loses interest in the early commits and possibly all of these grandstanding pressers will fizzle away?
On Gray, I do believe USc will be his ultimate desination. However, I don't think local coaches would hold it against USc given the circumstances of his recruitment/early presser and commitment to USC if they did drop him.
I do think that kids are going to extremes with the early press conferences. It is a little bit too dramatic for my taste. I also think that many schools could care less if a player commits to school A, because school B is still going to recruit them jst as hard and maybe harder.
I know a coach cannot publicly comment on a player he is recruiting, but I sometimes wish that our coaches would comment on players they are no longer recruiting. I realize that this could backfire and piss off some HS coaches, etc., but it always gripes me when a recruit says "I picked school X over U.S.C." when U.S.C. had stopped recruiting him during the process. Just once, I'd like to see our coaches say "WE didn't offer" or some variation in response. Yes, I know I'm petty, but these kids -- like Gray -- can really yank a program around and cause serious damage, all the while reveling in their limelight.
pbr, if you're talking about a kid like Mason Cloy etc.....A coach can't comment on a recruitable athlete, period. They can't comment on him until after signing day, and even then, why bust out some negatives. Example A. A coach calls a kid out, for lying about an offer. What does a coach at Spring Valley think about that? He won't let said coach, or anyone on his staff back in the door. It would hurt you way more than it could ever help you, and SOS doesn't spend time on the internet checking on recruits. They look forward, and might have to go back to a spring valley to recruit a kid, whether it's now or 5 years in the future.
Eddy, my post was mainly rhetorical ventilation. I recognized most of the points you made.
CF, you've alluded to some weak recruiting links on the staff. Does SOS know this? What do you think he'll do about it?
cf, a fairly well informed tater friend of mine said another reason T Rob is coming back to USC is that he is bringing a team mate with him that we are probably going to offer. heard anything on that?
USc will take Robertson's teammate DE Byron McKnight 6'4 215 4.8 only and ONLY when Robertson is enrolled in school in January 2007.McKnight is NOT on the visit with Robertson. It is just Travian and his dad.
thanks. let us know if you hear anything on the visit, man! if you can!
CF: what is the deal with the McKnight offer? You say we will take him only if TR is enrolled in January 2007. Is the offer that explicit?
More generally, what does the offer say about our DE recruiting? On your post below about our top 5 remaining DEs, McKnight is not listed.
Finally, what is the deal with Gary Gray? If reports are true, he was on campus today meeting with TR and perhaps Hemingway. What could he possibly be telling them that is helpful to us in light of recent events?
McKnight is likely a prep school sign and place. I evaluated him at prospect camp and he has tremendous upside. If he academics were better, he would have multiple offers.
Gray was there with QR. Gray is telling recruits that he is still coming to USC. I don't think there is any need for concern there.
