August 5th Practice Report -Defensive Newcomer Impressions

DE Casper Brinkley ran with the first team all evening and clearly looks the part from an athletic standpoint. Defensive line coach Brad Lawing also likes the character Brinkley brings to the table, as he has great work ethic and is very coachable. Cockfather Illustrated projects Brinkley to hold down the starting position over incumbant Jordin Lindsey.

DE Eric Norwood was also impressive and will likely be the back up to Ryan Brown. The Akworth, GA star is a legitimate 6'2 256, and will grow into a 275-280 pound strong-side defensive end. Norwood was seen working after practice with a defenisve graduate assistant coach to improve his hand technique from some of the drills used in practice. The rivals.com 3 star prospect moves very well, and looks physically ready to play.

DE Terrance Campbell is one player that really stands out from a physical standpoint. The South Cobb High School product is 6'3 270 pounds and will likely grow into a 290 pound defensive tackle. The rivlas.com 3 star prospect could play this season, but don't be surprised to see Campbell red-shirt and then move to the interrior defensive line in 2007.

DT Kenrick Ellis spent his first practice conditioning with strength coach Mark Smith. Ellis is out of shape, but for a guy that weighs 349 pounds, he doesn't look that overweight. Defensive line coach Brad Lawing would like to get 10 snaps per game out of Ellis, so he will be one to keep an eye on as fall camp progresses.

LB Rodney Paulk appears to have gained 10-15 pounds of muscle since we saw him last year at the shrine bowl. The RNE product lined up at SLB behind Marvin Sapp and Yvan Banag, but also played second team when the defense went into their nickle package. I can see Paulk playing this year in certain situations, but I know USC's coaches would love to red-shirt him and let him grow another year before playing.

LB Vandaral Shackleford is much bigger than the 191 pounds he was listed on signing day. The Riverdale, GA native moves well, but I really didn't get to see that much of him. I could definitely see him red-shirting this season.

CB Captain Munnerlyn was very impressive in one-on-one drills and drew the praise of secondary coach Ron Cooper on several ocassions. On one play he completely jammed WR OJ Murdock at the line of scrimage, and Murdock could not run his route. Munnerlyn's speed is as advertised, but what was impressive was his aggressiveness in coverage. The Mobile, AL native could be a factor on the depth chart at CB this season.

FS Darian Stewart ran with the first team the enitre practice, as Brandon Isaac sat out of practice. The Huntsivlle, AL safety is a big, physical player that can really run. He will likely avoid a red-shirt this season. Depending on Brandon Isaac's situation, Stewart could be the starter at FS.

ROV Emmanuel Cook did not disappoint from a physical standpoint. He ran with the 2nd team behind Chirs Hampton and should play this fall.

FS Nick Prochak is an impressive physical specimen. It will be interesting to track his progress this fall. The former Sparanburg High School QB has the frame to gain 20-30 pounds easily, and could play a number of positions depending on how big he gets.
