Cockfather Illustrated's Updated 10 Most Wanted List

In the third edition of Cockfather Illustrated's 10 Most Wanted release of the summer, we take an inside look at USC's top 10 recruiting targets overall, regardless of position. Players will be listed alphabetically. We have taken into consideration players that will likely take an official visit to USC in rating the prospects.

CB Akeem Auguste 5'11 175 4.4 Hollywood, FL Chaminade-Madonna High School
Auguste is one of the premiere cover corners in the sunshine state, and a prospect that could very well see his stock soar during his senior season. As a junior, the 38th rated player in the state of Florida according to Rivals.com had 60 tackles and 7 interceptions. Auguste will enter the season with a top 4 of Florida, Florda State, Auburn, and South Carolina. The 4 star prospect has developed a particularly strong relationship with USC recruiter Robert Gillespie, going as far as to say that Gillespie has been like a big brother to him. The Florida Gators will be tough to beat on Auguste, but Gillespie will give the Gamecocks an excellent shot at landing this shut-down corner.

WR Jason Barnes 6'4 196 4.47 Charlotte, NC Independence High School- Although currently rated as a 3 star performer by Rivals.com, sources close to the USC program insist the Independence High School star is the best pure wide receiver prospect on the Gamecocks recruiting board. Last month, Cockfather Illustrated projected Barnes to commit to South Carolina. Since that time, Barnes has continued to go back and forth between the Tarheels and Gamecocks. It was expected that the blue chip wide receiver would make his announcement public last friday, but a family emergency caused yet another delay in Barnes decision. While nothing is certain in recruiting, a source close to the USC program still feels the Gamecocks will be the pick, so we will not change our forecast.

ATH Mark Barnes 6'2 195 4.5 Richland Northeast High School - The number 7 wide receiver prospect in America according to Rivals.com was seen on the USC practice fields Saturday evening, as the Gamecocks began the second year of The Steve Spurrier Era. The 3rd rated prospect in the Palmetto state, regardless of position, has a top two consisting of USC and Louisville. The Rivals.com top 100 member, has been long considered a USC lock, and Cockfather Illustrated projects Barnes to sign with USC, but not before he makes several trips this fall. Should the RNE two-way star be selected for the U.S. Army All-America game set to be played in January of 2007, Barnes could make his announcement before a nation-wide audience on NBC.

WR Matt Clements 6'2 185 4.34 Naples, FL Baron Collier High School- Clements has recently gone on record as saying a commitment to South Carolina could be coming as early as September, when the 43rd rated prospect in the sunshine state will make an official visit to Columbia. The Baron Collier 400m record holder also holds offers from Auburn, Clemson, Ohio State, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Virginia, among others. Clements would be another weapon in Steve Spurrier's offensive arsenal at USC. Clements would be the fastest receiver to play for the Gamecocks since current Minnesota Vikings receiver Troy Williamson, who was selected 7th overall in the 2005 NFL draft.

DE Carlos Dunlap 6'6 245 4.65 Fort Dorchester High School - Look for this 4 star jumbo athlete's stock to soar during his senior season, as a move into the rivals.com 100 is not out of the question. Dunlap is a monster of an athlete that could grow into a 300 pound defensive tackle on the next level. The rivals.com 250 member enters his senior season as a 16 year old who is pushing 6'7. Dunlaps father played basketball at South Carolina during the 1979-80 season for legendary coach Frank McGuire, and the elder Dunlap would prefer his son to choose South Carolina, preferably by Labor Day. While the 4 star prospect is not publicially tipping his hand, Cockfather Illustrated believes the Gamecocks hold a big lead as pre-season practice begins.

QB Stephen Garcia 6'3 217 4.7 Tampa, FL Chamberlin High School - Fresh off a strong performance at the Elite 11 QB camp, Garcia and his family made the long awaited unofficial visit to Columbia this past weekend. The trip was a success, as according to multiple sources, USC increased it's lead over Florida. The 4 star prospect was hosted by Ike Crofoot, and also hung out with local high school stars Mark Barnes, Quintin Richardson, and Cheraw DE Cliff Matthews. Garcia finished the Elite 11 camp as the third rated quarterback in the camp, coming in behind fellow Floridian John Brantley IV, and Clemson commitment Willard Korn. USC's coaches would prefer Garcia to make his decision sooner rather than later. While Garcia is publically saying he will wait until after making at least three official visits this fall before making his decision, we feel that a decision could be coming down before Labor Day.

CB Gary Gray 5'10 165 4.55 Richland Northeast High School - The rivals 5 star corner back was USC's first commitment for the class of 2007, as he held a press conference at his high school in March to make his college decision. At that time Gray chose to commit to the Gamecocks over offers from Notre Dame, FSU, FL, TN, Auburn, and Michigan, among others. The third-rated corner back prospect in the nation according to Rivlas.com had change of heart this summer, and has decided to re-open his recrutiment after an unofficial visit to South Bend, Indiana last month. Gray will visit Notre Dame officially on Sept. 16th for the Michigan game. The number two prospect in the Palmetto state regardless of position will then make his official visit to South Carolina the weekend of the Auburn game. That will give USC's coaching staff more time to spend with Gray and his family on Friday and Saturday, as the Auburn game will be played on ESPN Thursday Night Football. USC is the leader going into the season, and we firmly believe that Gray will re-affirm his pledge to the Gamecocks shortly after his official visit.

WR Dion Lecorn 6'0 205 4.48 Ocala, FL Trinity Christian Academy - Lecorn is the favorite target of 5 star quarterback John Brantley IV. The 4 star receiver is another prospect that will enter his senior season at 16 years of age, and could grow into a 230 pound bruising H-back, or a Chad Johnson type receiver. The rivals.com 250 prospect has excellent hands, and is a great open field runner. South Carolina has held the lead for Lecorn for some time now, and it appears the only thing standing between the 16th rated player in the Sunshine state from making a verbal commitment to South Carolina, is arranging a trip to Columbia with his mother. So far this summer, the Lecorn family has not been able to make that happen. Look for a September visit to USC for a home game, followed by Lecorn making his commitment to the Gamecocks.

DE Cliff Matthews 6'4 225 4.6 Cheraw High School- USC is battling the Georgia Bullodgs for the services of the nations 4th rated weak-side defensive end prospect. The 4 star prospect was in attendance last Saturday evening as the Gamecocks began fall practice. Matthews spent the day in Columbia with current USC commitment, and close friend Quintin Richardson, and had a very productive meeting with head coach Steve Spurrier and defensive line coach Brad Lawing. While maintaining a top 3 of Georgia, Clemson, and USC, in that order, Cockfather Illustrated has learned that Clemson is out of the race for Matthews, and USC is positioning itself nicely as the 5th rated Pametto prospect nears his decision date of August 17th.

DL D'Angelo McCray 6'4 289 4.7 Jacksonville, FL Andrew Jackson High School Once considered a commitment to the Florida Gators, McCray has now re-opened his recrutiment, and the Gamecocks are right in the thick of it for the 7th rated prospect in the state of Florida. The 4 star stud jumbo athlete, who also plays tight end, will be making a visit to Columbia the weekend of the Georgia game. McCray will be accompanied on that visit by his teammate and best frined, RB Troy Pollard. D-Lo would perfer to attend the same school as Pollard, and currently the only schools that are willing to make that deal are USC, Illinois, Georgia Tech, and NC State. If McCray sticks to his decision to attend the same school as Pollard, Cockfather Illustrated believes USC will be the pick, as McCray is a huge Steve Spurrier fan, and in an interview with Scout.com posted earlier this evening, stated that South Carolina was recruiting him the hardest.

CFI,
I agree with you on all things except I believe you need Jamire Williams on the list instead of Akeem Auguste. I think Williams is much more realistic and a very similar player talentwise and physically to Auguste. I think he might even be a little more flexible in that he appears to have all the tools to play Safety at the next level. Another side note, is that as Tony Morrell made us aware two weeks ago, he has two underclassmen LB's on his team that our staff offered on the spot at camp last summer. He has a teammate in Arkee Smith that the Gamecock staff offered on the spot at camp last summer. He's also "boys" with both McCray and Troy Pollard, as well as Jacoby Monroe and CB Mario Butler.

I think Williams is more important in many respects to where this class is going than Auguste. If we can take a haul of about 5 or so kids from Jacksonville, watch out. It could create pipelines down the line that will benefit USC on the recruiting trail.

Now that I've rambled on and on about Jacksonville, I have to say this is a damn good list and I see official visits from all 10.
