FOOTBALL SEASON HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!

Today is August 5, 2006. Just another Saturday, right? Wrong! Today is the day many of us have waited for since the end of spring. It is a day Steve Spurrier has waited for since Carolina's miserable performance in the second half of last year's Independence Bowl, where he complained that the players didn't care very much that they blew a 28-7 lead to Missouri in a 38-31 loss.

Today represents a new beginning, a day filled with anticipation. Today represents the beginning of a journey that will lead down a road no one, including the head ball coach, knows will end. What lies ahead for the 2006 Gamecocks? Will they improve upon last years 7-5 record? Will this be the year the "Fun 'n Gun" offense gets untracked? Will USC's defense improve upon last years second half collapse in the Independence Bowl?

Today is the day that begins a journey for a highly rated recruiting class, and many red-shirt freshmen that will be depended upon heavily if this is to be a successful season. Today begins the last go 'round for players like Syvelle Newton, Chris White, Fred Bennett, Thomas Coleman, and Brandon Isaac.

For tens of thousands of Gamecock fans, today marks the beginning of "Hope." As I told my good friend Marty Lambert, as Gamecock fans, sometimes all we have is hope. We "hope" that this will be the year that Steve Spurrier beats Clemson. We "hope" this will be the year that the Gamecocks somehow find a way to win 8 or 9 games and make a new years day bowl game. We "hope" that this is the year is that begins the 10 year run of 8 to 10 win seasons and a string of victories over our in-state arch rival, and an SEC Championship.
