dj...It's not as bad as you think. First of all, our secondary is very fast and talented. Second, they will be very well coached. Secondary breakdown? Maybe not. The SEC has become a run first league again, except for the team coached by SOS. I like our corners, and the defense will be much better in the front 7 than a year ago. The defense will also have more speed overall.
The safeties are the key. USC will be fine at corner. Hampton is a solid player, and if Isaac is able to return after his three game suspension, that will be a big boost.
Stewart, COok, and Munneryln are very talented. Carlos Thomas can be the next in a long line of NFL corners at USC.
Stoney Woodson is only a sophomore, and has had an excelletn fall camp. He is coming into his own as a player, just like Gurminder Thind.
Back off the ledge chickenscratch. The secondary and the pass rush will be better than you think. In fact, later this week, I will forecast my prediction for the defense and how I think they will stack up overall. You may be pleasantly surprised by both my prediction and by the play of the defense this fall.
1) Smelley has no impact on Garcia
2)QRich should be out for a couple of weeks. He has a sprained MCL.
3)Willard will not win the Heisman, Chris Smelley and Stephen Achilles Garcia could though.
First, let me take a second to say what a great blog this is, Cockfather. You're really hitting some great depth analysis where our team is concerned.
With regard to our DBs, I'm really encouraged by what I hear about Captain Munnerlyn. He sounds as iof he has the same kind of closing speed that Sheldon Brown had. IMO, Sheldon was the best cover corner in the SEC his senior year.
I'm thrilled with the fact that Jon Joseph was a first round pick. But, the honest truth was that receivers who could get him turned in coverage could beat him all day.
When your DBs have the great closing speed of a Sheldon Brown, you can play a bit of a looser coverage ala the Carolina Panthers and still intercept plenty of balls by stepping into lanes versus playing a straight man coverage as we tended to with JJ.
We really won't know until the whistle sounds how good they really are. But, I'm encouraged by what i hear from fall practice.
