Tonight marks the first time the USC football team will practice in full pads. It should be a very spirited practice. Last year, the team immediately went into one of my favorite drills, the Oklahoma drill. It is trench warfare, and a drill that spearates the prospects from the suspects.
In the Oklahoma drill, it is one-on-one at the line of scrimmage. When the ball is snapped a battle takes place in between two cones that are approx 5 yards wide between the offensive and defensive player. There is a running back in the back field who will take off running and must stay in between the cones. The defensive player must get off the block and tackle the running back. The offensive player tries to mash the defensder so the back can run free.
Coach Spurrier and staff added a new wrinkle to the drill last fall, placing a defenisve back approx 10-12 yards down field that must tackle the back should he get past the first defender.
Cockfather Illustrated will be on hand at tonights practice, and provide a full practice report later on tonight.
Post your comments and questions in this thread. If you have any particular players you would like me to watch tonight, just make the request in this thread.

Look forward to the reports CF!
i agree this is a great drill, and jacyn and I will be sure to be at practice early to make sure to see it should they start off with it again.
It will be interesting to see how some of the frosh OL hold up.
I'd like to know how the Brinkleys do. Thanks.
Any particular person anyone want me to watch tonight.
PRACTICE:
Impressed with:
Smelley - left after his first drive of 11 on 11, but he led the team down the field for a score. He makes some pretty bad throws that are head scratchers, but half of them look as if he and the reciever were making different reads or he threw to the wrong spot, etc...the pass he made to OJ down the right sideline was great, and in fact looked improvised, as he moved outside the pocket and OJ took off and he floated one to him on the sideline.
Captain - He kept Sidney from catching a ball tonight, so that basically makes him pretty good in and of itself. In all seriousness, he seems like he can stay with the recievers and seems to cut and change direction well.
OJ- OJ looked to be alot more focused tonight, and made some plays, and just in general seemed to be more with it.
Fred Bennett - "ooooooh" number 1 of the night game when Bennett went to jam Moe Brown at the line and absolutely manhandled him back about 6 yards into the backfield. Bennett can stick with Sidney pretty well...as has been said before, it is a great thing that these two get to practice against each other every day.
Heath Batchelor gets "oooooooh" number 2 of the night for absolutely stuffing Kenrick Ellis into the ground in the Oklahoma drill. The best part was, the coaches lined them up again, and for the second straight time, Batchelor pancaked Ellis into the turf. that's 340 pound Ellis.
Bobby Wallace also looked pretty good, especially in the series in the 11 on 11 with Smelley quarterbacking.
Although I didn't get much of a chance to see the outside linebackers, Dakota Walker just looks great in his pads.
Jasper Brinkley was high intensity as always.
Stanley Doughty acquited himself very well in the Oklahoma drills, absolutely beasting a couple OLinemen, although I couldn't see who.
thats about it, I am sure CF will provide us with a very detailed report soon!
