Today Inside Cockfather Illustrated

One week from today. It's hard to beleive. 7 days until Steve Spurrier leads the Gamecocks into action against Mississippi State. I'll be there, will you?

Of course, at 3 pm today, Conway WR Junior Hemingway will make his college decision. Cockfather Illustrated believes the decision will come down to Michigan and USC.

Later today, Cockfather Illustrated will take a look at the runningback position.

Post your commnets and questions in this thread.

To Hell With Clemson!

Looking forward to our trip to Starkville. We are staying in Columbus, MS. Will be there Wed and Thurs night. I'll be looking for a tall bald dude with flocks of women around him!!! LOL

I swear, I tell myself not to get caught up in this early recruiting crap. But here I go again, getting myself all worked up over a decision a 17 yr old will make today! LOL

Thursday night football can't get here soon enough.

OT: here is something for you to do today. Go look at where West Virginia is starting our ranked. Then go look at their schedule. I haven't seen an easier schedule this year. And the thing is, they're pretty doggone good. I really do not want to see a team with a schedule like that undefeated come December.

I think the defensive staff is trying to find the best comination of players to get their best 11 on the field. When you have som nay new players on defense, it's really not uncommon to see this. Usually, when you have a vereran team, there are few position moves. when you have a ton of newcomers, the coaches are experimenting up until the last practice before game prep. to get the right combination on the field.

Am I concerned yes, but having been a coach for 14 years, I know that it's not as much to get owrked up about as a lot of folks are.

USC has a excellent defensive coaching staff. They may not all be great recruiters, but as coaches they are top notch. It's jsut going to take ahile for these younger guys to grow up. If you want to blame someone, blame Lou Holtz and staff for leaving tehm in such as mess.

Who is Jr. H going to announce for today? I believe that it will be Michigan and when he does there is going to be a meltdown when we have never really been in the race. Thanks,

DE Eric Norwood. One coach said, and I quote..."We can win the SEC Championship with him. He will be a great football player."

poTaterHater said...

Sorry Diablo...

Norwood is out for the year with an injury! You gonna have to pick again. I will have to go with the safe pick, J Brinkley at MLB.

I take that back! It's Campbell out with an injury not Norwood! My bad...

Real Gamecock,

Please take a look at our roster and at the seniors that were signed by Holtz that will be major contributers. It is like we are playing the season missing an entire class.

spot on, dixie.

Between the non-qualifiers, the total busts, the transfers, the bongheads, and the felons, that's about 1 full class that --poof-- went up in smoke, no pun intended.

I think you can blame Lou Holtz for the defensive depth, regardless of what Ko Simpson and Joseph did.

He and his "staff" didn't recruit Gaines Adams, Phillip Merling, Rashaad Jackson or Barry Richardson hard...all of those guys would have been Gamecocks and all of those guys are now playing key roles for the school up the road.

With Adams and Merling, we had former Gamecock players coaching them.

We could have gotten Jackson at any point in the process.

With Richardson, I believe we had Jappy Oliver, the worst recruiter in the history of college football on him and we really didn't show him any love regardless.

Our current staff, though, appears like it is very good at making evals on under the radar players.

Eric Norwood, Rodney Paulk, Captain Munnerlyn, Heath Batchelor, Chris Smelley, Chris Hail, Darian Stewart, Moe Brown, Terrence Campbell and perhaps more all will be better than their "star" ratings indicate.

With the current defensive line up, we won't be starting any true freshman...

DE Casper Brinkley Jr.
DT Marque Hall Jr.
DT Nathan Pepper Soph.
DE Ryan Brown R-Jr.
LB Curtis Rice R-Jr.
LB Jasper Brinkley Jr.
LB Marvin Sapp Soph.
ROV Chris Hampton Jr.
FS Stoney Woodson R-Soph.
CB Carlos Thomas Soph.
CB Fred Bennett

A lot of these guys, it's just their time to step in. Chris Hampton, Woodson, Carlos Thomas, Curtis Rice, Marvin Sapp, Pepper, Brown...all have been working hard and have great attitudes. They all have been in the program for a while and seen action on defense and special teams.

I'm not as concerned as I would be trotting Paulk, Cook, Norwood, Munnerlyn et. all out there as starters in the first game on national TV. It's not bad for those guys to see a lot of snaps, but I am more comfortable going with these guys as starters.

I agree with you on the "its time for these guys to step up".It is and i think everyone u named will play alot.I also think our coaches do their jobs well and they will have the best guys out there on gameday.I really like what ive seen and heard about when it comes to Paulk. The kid has a motor and works hard.I also like Walker and hope he finds his place in our D.All in all im not that worried about our D.They are buying into the system and worker their butts off. With some talent i think if you learn what u have to do and work hard you will be alright. These kids are trying and the ones that are not well they are learning their fate fast

I believe that's how USC is going to line them up against Mississippi State next Thursday.

We'll just have to wait and see :)

Taylors --

FWIW, I agree with you about WVU. They are picking a perfect year (wiht that schedule) to have their best team in along, long time - but if they play to the level of their competition, or look past somebody, all title aspirations could be gone that quickly.
