USC Football Notebook August 10, 2006 - Part 2

Cockfather Illustrated spoke with a source today that has been extremely close to the USC football program for the past 5 years, and our source said today that this is the best freshman class to arrive in Columbia during that five year time span.

All of the offensive linemen are SEC caliber, and only one of those prospects is a developmental prospect. My source feels that they will all be capable of playing by next season.

Freshmen mentioned specifically were:

Each member of "The Alabama Gang" was mentioned specifically.

QB Chris Smelley - Has the strongest arm on the team.

CB Captain Munnerlyn - none of the WR's want to go against him in 1-on-1 drills.

FS Darian Stewart - reminds him of Ko Simpson

OT Heath Batchelor - amazed everyone in the Oklahoma drill.

DE Eric Norwood - "Special" was the one word used to describe the Georgia freshman.

DL Terrance Campbell - will be huge. Definitely a defensive tackle down the road.

LB Rodney Paulk- Doesn't talk much, just goes out and play. Is one of the hardest workers on the team.

OG Kevin Young - The most ready to play of the freshmen OL's

OG Garrett Anderson - is right behind Young.

OT Hutch Eckerson - Will be USC's 3rd tackle, and has the potential to be "big-time"

WR Chris Hail- Was unbelievable this summer as a CB

WR Moe Brown- Will surprise everyone this fall. He is a special talent. Cannot belive how fast he is.

Hard to believe how SOS has ratcheted up our recruiting efforts. We can win with these guys.

wow. I don't know where else to say this, since yes I am up at 2 in the morning, but on TIF today there was a question asking if Fred Bennett would be moved to safety, and one asking if Rank would be moved to fullback. That makes you want to reach through a computer and slap someone upside their head.

Believe it or not, I've seen and heard questions like that for years. They come from fans who aren't used to DEPTH. They can't get used to the idea of having more than one quality player at a position. They better get used to it.

CF,
A few questions. Have we cooled on Dontrelle Inman? Also, I saw the comment from your source that Darian Stewart reminds him of Ko. They, I believe, have had Stewart running first team from the day he got here (just like Ko), but I haven't heard a lot of specific commentary on him. Does he have the ability to take the SEC by storm from the word "go"?, or is his transition going to be a little more typical of a freshman coming into the SEC. The staff sure seems to be showing a lot of confidence in him.

Separate Thought: A sure hope that down the road, when Coach Spurrier decides to retire that we will always keep our head coach within the Spurrier Era coaching tree. I think David Reaves is a dead-ringer for a future major Division I coaching job, any idea whether Spurrier, Jr. has those aspirations?

Not cockfather, but I can tell you that yes we have cooled on Inman. Inman was running 4.8s at camps, and he has kinda become a plan B type guy, but I see no way we actually miss out on enough WRs to take him.
